The Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER), University of Ghana, Legon is a policy research institute based within the College of Humanities at the University of Ghana (UG)


ISSER with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) is strengthening its capacity to provide Measurement, Learning and Evaluation (MLE) technical assistance services to institutions that are implementing development projects in West Africa.This initiative has established an MLE unit at ISSER to provide operational services across all aspects of survey research and practice; from study design to  data collection and storage, analysis and dissemination of findings. The unit seeks to achieve three key objectives: (1) strengthen technology infrastructure and innovation, (2)improve advocacy, communications and marketing, and (3)establish regional partnerships and networks.

This is a great opportunity for the right candidate to become a part of an exciting  and   growing survey unit. The upside and growth opportunities for the successful candidate are enormous.

The successful candidate shouldbe:

  • Educated at university degree level(a master’s degree in aquantitative discipline is preferable);
  • Experienced in socio-economic survey (ideally in fieldwork operations) for 2-3 years with developed project management skills;
  • An excellent communicator with an interest in people and their behavior;
  • Able to organize with good problem-solving and numerical skills;
  • Able to pay attention to details, plan ahead and meet deadlines;
  • Positive, with constructive attitudes to ISSER and tocolleagues;
  • Comfortable in understanding  and evaluating  requirements  from a research project brief;
  • Able to anticipate potential ‘potholes’ and take preventive measures sothat projects’ flow will remain smooth at all times;
  • Enthusiastic with a desire to learn from an experienced team; and
  • Creative in using leading edge research tools.

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Handle a full range of project tasks under the direction of the Director of ISSER,with advice from local and International Senior MLEAdvisors;
  • Have  a  basic  grounding  in  quantitative  research  techniques  and processes;
  • Carry out  quality control checks;
  • Prepare  fieldwork  costs  for  research   proposals;
  • Monitor and supervise field work;
  • Manage  external  partners  when necessary;
  • Attend relevant training sessions;
  • Ensure projects are running to agreed timelines and budgets;
  • Undertake all work in accordance with the MLE Unit Code of Conduct;
  • Actively contribute to ISSER and share team experiences;
  • Handle client and colleague enquiries competently;
  • Communicate relevant information accurately and in a timely manner and implement tasks delegated by the Unit’s Business Manager
  • Assist the Business Manager and the Operations Manager in the performance of their duties

Starting salary: Competitive, commensurate withexperience
